Quex Barn is a farmers’ market and restaurant owned by local farmer and businessman Ian Mather. His passion for local produce is only matched by the quality of that local produce. Situated in Birchington near Margate surrounded by fertile land in the legendary micro-climate of Thanet means that he doesn’t have to go very far to get the best. Ian’s speciality is meat. He rears much of the meat that is on sale in the barn, while the beef is from in the surrounding fields of the Quex Estate.
A quick summary.. lovely barn with roaring log burner in the winter where you can warm yourself over a nice hot chocolate. The farmer has his own pigs and the pork is the best I have tasted for a long time. Lovely salt beef from the Quex herd which is made on the premises. There is also a fishmonger who has a good selection of the local catch. There are local potatoes and other veg, cauliflowers particularly good from this neck of the woods as the chalky soil gives them a real strong flavour. The Quex estate is awash with the yellow of rape in May and June and produces the most wonderful rape seed oil which is bottled and sold on the premises. Some would think slightly pricey at a fiver, but a little goes a long way, and the flavour of roasties is wonderful. You can take your bottle, a very tall attractive one at that, back for refilling. Just what I am about to do.
Oh and there is a lovely restaurant serving what is produced from the estate. Very relaxed and reasonably priced. The freezers also provide local food producers cook at home ready meals.. The Chai Stop organic curries and the like. . Just won a taste of kent award and quite rightly so.. Quex Barn is a really nice place to shop, and I promise I use it weekly and they haven't paid me to write this.. Just want to keep the place in business because it's good to see local organic food on my doorstep.. and did I mention the apple juice......!!
